Road-safety drive begins

The first global decade of action for road safety has been launched.

Governments in countries such as Australia, Indonesia and Uzbekistan will release national plans to improve safety and services for victims of road accidents.

The decade is being coordinated by the WHO (World Health Organisation).

The WHO estimates the plans could save five million lives and prevent 50 million injuries across the 10 years.

In the UK, the charity Brake, the Association of British Insurers and Co-operative Insurance marked the start of the campaign by calling on the UK government to improve the learner driver system.
