An early day motion has been submitted in Parliament calling for the transport secretary to bring forward proposals for reform of insurance arrangements for young.
On Thursday, John McDonnell MP said: “This House notes with concern the high cost of car insurance for young and newly qualified drivers, with quotes for insurance reaching £8000 per annum.
“It recognises that this can impair the ability of young people to seek and gain employment in many areas where public transport is not a viable travel to work option, can prevent young people gaining sufficient driving experience and can lead to some young people driving without any insurance; and therefore calls on the Secretary of State for Transport to require the insurance industry to bring forward proposals to reform insurance arrangements for young drivers, possibly by the use of excess charges, to ensure that motor insurance is available at a reasonable cost for young drivers.”
On Friday, Maria Eagle submitted questions for written answer on or after 4 April calling for the transport secretary to provide “more affordable access to public transport for 17 to 25 year olds affected by rising motor insurance premiums”.
The MP for Garston and Halewood also asked whether the transport department plans to fund research on international experience in reducing the number of personal injury claims relating to motor insurance; if the transport secretary can assess the merits of deploying and publicising new technology to assess how cars are driven by young drivers for the purposes of reducing casualty rates; and if he has made an assessment of the feasibility of replacing the Pass Plus advanced driving course with other means of proving competence to insurer.
