ICO to investigate Jack Straw’s claims

A spokesman for the Information Commissioner’s office has confirmed that it is launching an investigation into claims from Mr Straw that motor insurers who sell clients’ details to personal injury lawyers are breaking the law.

A spokesman at the ICO told Post that at this stage it is still making enquiries into the claims made by Jack Straw and it is looking at further information on the organisations involved in order to establish whether there has been a breach of the data protection act.

“It is difficult to put a timescale on these things as obviously we need to establish whether there has been a breach and if there has been what the possible action would be,” he said. “At this stage we are still having to find out further information so we can make a decision.”

He said that it would be approaching insurers and any other organisations that were implied and may be in breach.
