Man badly hurt at Tata Steel plant

Tata Steel, the firm once known as Corus, has been fined for breaking the law regarding the use of dangerous machinery at Corby Steel Works in Northamptonshire, which led to serious injury.

The lax attitude saw one worker, a 34-year-old man, sustain serious crush injuries and several broken bones. Safety guards were not in place around a broken machine which the man had been asked to repair. He had turned his attention to adjacent equipment while carrying out the repair work when the first machine he was working on started up.

It ended up crushing the man’s chest and abdomen, as well as giving him a series of broken bones.

Safety inspectors found that despite having a written safety procedure which calls for machines to be kept isolated until any maintenance work is finished, Tata Steel had not implemented its own rules.

Appearing before Northampton Crown Court, the London-based company admitted breaking the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was fined £20,000. It also must pay prosecution costs of £24,052.
